How to get to Komodo Island: fly to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, on Flores, then take a boat into the park. The Komodo Guide site reports 1.5 to 2 hours by speedboat to Loh Liang on Komodo, and about one hour to Loh Buaya on Rinca. Tickets are reported as advance-only, through SiOra.
Where do you start when working out how to get to Komodo Island?
Start in Labuan Bajo. Mongabay puts it plainly: to see dragons you begin in this town in western Flores. The park itself lies between Sumbawa and Flores, per UNESCO, and it is made up of islands, so the trip always has at least two legs and ends with a boat.
- Fly to Komodo Airport (LBJ). Wikipedia locates it in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, on Flores.
- Secure park entry. Tickets are reported as advance-only, which is covered below.
- Take a boat to Loh Liang on Komodo or Loh Buaya on Rinca.
- Walk. Wikivoyage says movement on the islands is on foot only, with no roads or motor transport. That line is dated, since the BBC reported trucks on Rinca in 2020 during construction, but you should still plan to cover the ground on your own feet.
If you have not settled on an island yet, Komodo vs Rinca sets out the differences, and that choice shapes the boat you need.
How do you get to Labuan Bajo from Bali?
By air, for most people. Wikivoyage says several daily flights link Denpasar with Komodo Airport. It gives no timetable, and flight schedules change, so check current options with airlines directly.
Wild dragons do not live on Bali. To see Komodo dragons from Bali, you have to leave Bali for Flores. Anything on Bali itself would be a captive animal. See the zoo section of where to see Komodo dragons.
How long is the boat to each island?
For the boat from Labuan Bajo to Komodo Island or to Rinca, the speedboat and wooden-boat times here come from a community guide. They are reported figures rather than a schedule, and conditions can stretch them.
| Crossing from Labuan Bajo | Speedboat | Wooden boat | Landing point |
|---|---|---|---|
| To Rinca | About 1 hour | 2 to 2.5 hours | Loh Buaya |
| To Komodo Island | 1.5 to 2 hours | Not given by this source | Loh Liang |
How far is Rinca from Labuan Bajo? The Komodo Guide site places Loh Buaya on an inlet about 30 km southeast of the town, and describes Loh Liang as sitting in a sheltered bay on the east coast of Komodo, the island's main landing point. It gives no equivalent distance for Loh Liang. It also leaves out a wooden-boat time for Komodo, so do not assume the Rinca figure carries over. By speedboat, Komodo is the longer crossing.
So if your time is tight, this table is the deciding factor. The reported speedboat crossing to Rinca takes about half to two-thirds of the time to Komodo. That gap counts twice, because you make the trip in both directions.
Each landing has its own page: Komodo Island dragons and Rinca Island Komodo dragons. Sailing risk by month sits with the best time to see Komodo dragons.
Is there a public boat?
We cannot point you to a current public timetable. Wikivoyage describes a ferry between Sape and Labuan Bajo calling at Komodo once or twice a week and warns that it can be suspended in bad weather, but the note is undated. Verify it locally before you rely on it, and never make it your only way back to a flight.
GoBajo, a Labuan Bajo travel site, says park visits are usually booked in SiOra by the tour operator, which suggests many visitors arrange the trip through a company. The price table on this page includes a bundled quote reported by GoBajo and one listed shared day tour from Labuan Bajo, so you can see how third parties present these costs. Those listings belong to their publishers, and neither is an offer from us.
What should you book first?
Tickets cannot be refunded, and one travel site says an e-ticket is valid only for its printed date. No source sets a booking order, so ask how entry and boat are tied together before you pay for either. Komodo Resort, a dive operator, said in September 2026 that the gate no longer sells tickets and that visitors must reserve through SiOra first. Jakarta Globe, reporting on the visitor cap, named the SiOra mobile app as the tool for registering visitors and distributing them. The siora.id portal shows a Komodo Reservation option and a SIMAKSI option on its front page.
Ticket steps change, so use the portal itself or your operator. If an operator is handling your visit, ask whether it will book SiOra for you and when you will see confirmation. Daily numbers are capped; see Komodo National Park visitor limit. Whether space remains on your date is for SiOra or the park office to confirm.
The official entry fee and several extra charges reported by operators are in the price table on this page. Sources disagree on some of those extras, and the table shows which source reports which.
Can you see Komodo dragons in one day?
From Labuan Bajo, the reported crossing times allow it, and at least one shared day tour with a Komodo Island stop is listed publicly. Add up the legs before you commit: the crossing each way, plus a walk that the Komodo Guide site reports at 30 minutes or more, plus time at the station.
From Bali in a single day is a different proposition. You would need a flight each way on the same date, a boat each way, and a park visit in between, with no margin for a delayed flight or rough sea. Treat it as background and not a plan. An overnight in Labuan Bajo leaves more room for things to go wrong without costing you the visit.
What can stop the trip?
Sea conditions, mainly. The UK government warns that Indonesian seas can turn quickly and that travelling by boat can be dangerous, and it tells passengers to check the safety equipment. That advice covers the whole country rather than Komodo in particular, but it applies directly to the last leg of this trip. Look for life jackets before you board, and do not be embarrassed to ask.
Access can also change at short notice. A tourism ministry notice of 19 August 2026 gives a snapshot: sailing into the park had resumed and Marina Labuan Bajo was working normally, yet Kelimutu and other Flores sites remained shut. That status may have changed by the time you read this, so check the latest notice and read is Komodo Island closed before you fly. Leave a spare day before any onward flight if you can.
Which published prices did we check?
Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees change and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What do people ask about the journey?
How do I get to Komodo National Park to see dragons?
Fly to Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo on Flores, then take a boat to a landing point such as Loh Liang on Komodo or Loh Buaya on Rinca. Sort out park entry in advance, since gate sales are reported to have ended.
How do I reach Rinca Island to see Komodo dragons?
Take a boat from Labuan Bajo to Loh Buaya, which the Komodo Guide site puts at about an hour by speedboat. It gives two to two and a half hours for a wooden boat, and conditions can change either figure.
Is one day enough to see Komodo dragons?
From Labuan Bajo, the reported crossing times make a day trip possible, though no one can guarantee a sighting. From Bali, one day leaves no margin for a late flight or rough sea, so we would plan to stay overnight.
Can I see wild Komodo dragons in Bali?
No. Bali has no wild dragons. To see them in the wild you need to travel on to Labuan Bajo in western Flores and take a boat into the park.
Is there a public boat to Komodo Island?
We cannot confirm one. Wikivoyage describes a Sape to Labuan Bajo ferry calling at Komodo once or twice a week, but the note is undated and it warns of suspensions in bad weather. Check locally before relying on it.
